ABSTRACT

This chapter presents four core ethical principles that should be embraced by behavior analysts. These include the following. (1) We need to benefit others by protecting their rights and making sure that we are aware of the impact our physical and mental health can have on our clients. (2) We must treat others with compassion, dignity, and respect, including treating other equitably, respecting their privacy and confidentiality, actively promoting their autonomy, and encouraging personal choice. (3) We need to always behave with integrity in an honest and trustworthy fashion, properly representing ourselves and our work and following through on obligations. Finally, (4) we must ensure our competence by remaining within our scope of practice, staying current with new developments and within the boundaries of our competence. The client is the direct recipient of behavioral services, and a stakeholder is someone who may be impacted by or invested in the services.
