ABSTRACT

The Performed Culture Approach (PCA) has been successful in teaching students culturally appropriate communication skills. Unfortunately, Chinese language professors who find PCA's innovative treatment of language and culture practical and compelling for students are likely to find traditional communicative-based textbooks wanting. This chapter addresses the challenge of matching program-selected course materials with preferred pedagogy by adapting and supplementing Integrated Chinese (IC), a widely used textbook series, for a PCA-based curriculum. Drawing on noted pedagogical principles for developing East Asian language course materials, the author demonstrates how response drills accompanied by audio recordings for self-study facilitate performance-oriented instruction. The chapter concludes with learners' feedback after the course and the author's reflections on best practices for developing learner-centered materials.
