ABSTRACT

The chapter discusses some of the main issues affecting heritage management and practice in Africa. Most of the papers in this volume have highlighted some of the major issues affecting heritage on the continent. Largely due to its colonial past the resultant heritage has therefore turned to be biased towards the colonially created heritage. The question is how do we ensure that the continent's heritage is celebrated in all its multiple facets and ensure acceptability within the communities. Whilst the official heritage management continues to protect that which was constituted and identified during the colonial times, there is a clear need to incorporate all the stakeholders. Whilst some of these will continue to affect the practise, new issues are also emerging which may impact on heritage. This chapter focuses on some of these issues.
