ABSTRACT

The essay discusses the topic of domesticity in the works of Katherine Mansfield in reference to the garden space. In numerous publications devoted either to the domestic or the garden, it is hard to come across analyses that are devoted to the examination of the domestic within the space of garden. Subsequently, the objective of the study is twofold: to establish the way domesticity is introduced into the garden (narrative strategies), and second, to determine the function the domestic plays in the garden scenes. The examination is executed on the basis of two Mansfield’s short stories, namely ‘Prelude’ and ‘At the Bay’.
