ABSTRACT

This essay provides an analysis of the Polish reception of Mansfield’s life and work, with a particular interest in two contradictory articles written by the female critics Zofia Starowieyska-Morstinowa and Irena Krzywicka. during the interwar period (1918–39). Throughout the twentieth century, Mansfield and her work were de- and recontextualised in Poland via the act of translation, presentation and positioning within Polish culture. Through the analysis of refractions of Mansfield’s work, I would like to propose a catalogue of possible Polish ‘incarnations’ of Mansfield and try to confront them with the dynamics of Polish culture.
