ABSTRACT

White supremacy is a growing threat worldwide. This chapter begins with an overview of the statistics relating to hate groups and hate crimes. We review several factors that have led to the increase in white supremacist threats and violence, including a society rooted in systematic inequality, the law enforcement focus on terrorism abroad following the 9/11 attacks, and the easy access for dissemination and recruitment over social media. The chapter also introduces some key terminology useful in understanding the issue and providing a foundation for the rest of the text.
