ABSTRACT

This chapter provides frameworks and suggestions for educational programming related to preventing white supremacist indoctrination. This programming builds a foundation of empathy, equality, and morality. The chapter begins with a review of several theoretical frameworks for prevention, including Gordon’s operational classification system, the public health model, Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory, and the social-ecological model. We also review several educational and developmental models, including Chickering’s theory of identity development, Bloom’s taxonomy of critical thinking, Sanford’s challenge and support theory, and Kohlberg’s theory of moral development. We then offer practical suggestions for how to plan and implement prevention programming, including programming basics, engaging students, addressing microaggressions, bystander intervention, and teaching empathy.
