ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at many of the groups targeted by white supremacists and what makes each of those groups unique. While those who have been oppressed must be instrumental in the dissembling of those oppression, those white allies have an equally important part to play in addressing change from within a historically racist system. The chapter includes a lengthy excerpt from the manifesto written by the man who attacked the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina in 2015, which demonstrates the thought process of many white supremacists. The intersectional nature of many of those targeted is addressed, including how those who identify with more than one targeted group are at an even greater risk. We then look at federal laws addressing hate crimes and the limitations therein.
