ABSTRACT

The Indian media has covered the national security issues in an in-depth manner since partition in 1947. It covered both internal and external security issues under the broader framework of national security. Over the last seven decades since India’s existence as a nation-state, the nature and character of the Indian media have evolved significantly in how it reports on national security issues. A large portion of Indian media’s coverage has always dealt with Kashmir and Pakistan, but lately, there has been a slow yet significant shift towards the coverage of non-traditional security areas. This has ensured the quantity of coverage on national security has increased, but in terms of quality of the reportage and coverage of news stories, the Indian media is grappling with serious concerns, especially the broadcast media.
