ABSTRACT

This chapter describes mindfulness practices as tools for countering unconscious racial bias, influencing the neuroplasticity of the brain in a positive direction. The chapter reviews the basic neuroscience and psychology of bias along with mindfulness practices to facilitate learning about implicit bias and self-awareness. Research around the practice of mindfulness provides strong indications that a regular mindfulness practice helps individuals change habits of mind and behavior by developing greater self-awareness, which helps in overcoming implicit bias.
