ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I propose a framework for conceptualizing crisis intervention with couples. School-based family counseling (SBFC) professionals are often called upon to consult with parents subsequent to school-based crises. At other times, because of their availability and familiarity to parents, SBFC professionals may be called upon for brief crisis intervention with parents regarding an event outside of the school. Most crisis intervention literature focuses on individual clients in crisis. The framework I propose provides guidance to SBFC professionals on incorporating the interpersonal interactions within couples into their crisis intervention efforts. Situating myself in a poststructuralist approach to therapy, I have drawn on solution-focused and single-session therapy, the IPscope, and narrative approaches to therapy. I conclude with a composite case example.
