ABSTRACT

This chapter offers a practical guide to the steps a school principal can take to assure the safety and security of students, staff and families in the event of a disaster. Particular emphasis is placed on preparedness in various forms: (a) creating a comprehensive Disaster Response Plan; (b) preparation of the school community; (c) support of the school community through outreach in response to a disaster and (d) facilitating ongoing mental health supports through a trauma-informed schools and School-Based Family Counseling (SBFC) approach. Examples of actual disaster responses are included.
