ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the work done both before and after Rio+20 to secure the Sustainable Development Goals. The SDGs, as they are widely known, establish 17 new and ambitious sets of goals and their 169 targets for achieving sustainable development internationally. From poverty to hunger, health to education, equality to economic growth and, of course, the environment, the SDGs raised the level of ambition for governments and other stakeholders around the world. A major influence on this process was Paula Caballero, a Colombian official now working in the environmental sector in North America. This chapter reveals how Caballero helped advance a complicated and controversial agenda in the teeth of some serious obstacles.
