ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book details a result of eight years of enquiry into praxis-oriented acumens on the management of digital records in Africa by a new generation of records and archival scholars in Africa, conducted in conjunction with international peers. While there are similar categories of law impacting records and archives in Botswana, Kenya, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, the book contends that each country’s legal framework reflects its unique history and present. It then focuses on a separate harmonized study to ascertain the implementation of digital records infrastructure, particularly cloud computing, electronic content management, and enterprise resource planning. From a project which was commissioned by the Auditor General of South Africa, the book discusses authentication of records in the digital environment to support the audit process using the South African public sector in both municipalities and government departments.
