ABSTRACT

There are currently no published studies examining the impact of behavioural addictions during pregnancy in the United States. The United States is one of the global leaders in rates of caesarean births and maternal mortality among developed countries and offers the worst availability of paid parental leave. Even without addiction, pregnant women in the United States can experience a variety of difficulties. This chapter provides a comparison between behavioural addictions and substance addiction, reports on some of the negative consequences of substance use disorders during pregnancy, and proposes potential clinical considerations for and areas of future research on behavioural addiction in pregnancy.
