ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides the details of 50 artists working in the queer theatre that emerged in the United States (US) following the 1969 Stonewall Riots. Within the commercial realm of mainstream Broadway theatre, the book includes artists like Harvey Fierstein, William Finn, Nathan Lane, Joe Mantello, Terrence McNally, Billy Porter, and George C. Wolfe. It also includes an early pioneer as well as a current leader as key figures in a field that includes John Belluso, Josh Castille, Terry Galloway, Ryan J. Haddad, Antoine Hunter, Nomy Lamm, Chella Man, Maria Palacios, and Kelsy Schoenhaar. The book focuses on figures who are making theatre within the US, as well as artists with origins in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and outside of the US: Reza Abdoh, María Irene Fornes, Moisés Kaufman, Haruna Lee, Clint Ramos, Guillermo Reyes, Ana María Simo, and Chay Yew.
