ABSTRACT

As a celebrated writer, performer, and director, David Greenspan uses antirealistic formal experimentation in the service of queerly contesting norms of gender and sexuality. Three phases of his work explore the confessional, the fantastical, and the theatre-historical, respectively. His influences include not only explicitly queer playwrights like Gertrude Stein and Oscar Wilde but also playwrights and theatre theorists whom he comprehends queerly, ranging from Aristotle and Plato to Shakespeare and beyond. An Obie Award-winning actor participating in the projects of his queer contemporaries, he is especially regarded by critics for his performances in his own work, including his marathon solo performances.
