ABSTRACT

This entry details MacArthur-Award-winning Chicano/Chicanx playwright and producer Luis Alfaro’s contributions to queer Latino, Latina and Latinx theatre and performance over the course of his career. The chapter outlines his creation of gay and lesbian characters in comedies, Greek tragedy, and performance art from the 1980s to present. Looking to his work as an activist, Ybarra theorizes his works as a producer and playwright as upholding an ethic of service. She also outlines his importance of the development of theatre and performance theory in the work of David Román and José Muñoz.
