ABSTRACT

Existing at the corner of Broadway and soul, Billy Porter’s talent as an actor, singer, director, and playwright claims and occupies both space and time not intended for him as a gay, Black, and proud man living with HIV. After two decades of performances in Broadway and off-Broadway productions, Porter won a Tony Award and a Grammy Award for his performance as the drag queen Lola in the musical Kinky Boots (2013), and he has achieved even wider fame with his Emmy Award-winning performance in the television series Pose (2018–2021).
