ABSTRACT

Chay Yew first made his mark as a playwright who explores the intersection of Asian and queer identifications in plays such as As If He Hears, Porcelain, A Language of Their Own, Wonderland, and A Beautiful Country. As a director, he has collaborated with multiple playwrights of various races, ethnicities, sexualities, and genders. He continued to nurture emerging theatre artists in his role as artistic director of Chicago’s Victory Gardens Theater, where his accomplishments included establishing the Directors Inclusion Initiative to give opportunities to directors identifying as people of color, disabled, female, and/or LGBTQ.
