ABSTRACT

In 1985, Ellie Covan founded Dixon Place, a tiny storefront performance space in New York’s East Village. Originally located in her living room, the venue shifted locations several times, ultimately becoming a stand-alone theatre in 2008. Dixon Place has consistently presented new works and works-in-progress, celebrating its longstanding commitment to queer culture with the annual Hot! Festival. Dixon Place is unique as a prolific venue whose founding artistic director remains intimately involved in day-to-day operation of the space, where Covan has championed new work by artists such as Monstah Black, Kate Conroy, Susana Cook, D’Lo, John Fleck, Marga Gomez, Tim Miller, Peggy Shaw, and Carmelita Tropicana.
