ABSTRACT

Early childhood is the most critical and rapid period of complete and healthy motor and cognitive development in human life. On the basis of a review of the content design of the governmental documents on preschool children's sports policies over the past 40 years of reform and opening up, the characteristics and problems of the evolution of early childhood sport policies at different historical stages are worthy of exploration. This chapter aims to describe the current situation of preschool children's motor skills, physical activity, and physical fitness; review the preschool children sports policy in China since the reform and opening up; analyse the characteristics of the sports policy; and make recommendations to promote the sport and health in Chinese preschoolers. The timeline of preschool sport policy development spans over 40 years since the reform and opening up of the country, and it is the period of history with the greatest number of policy changes, adjustments, and impacts.
