ABSTRACT

National and regional Olympic committees are important promoters of global Olympic activities. As Habermas's theory of communicative rationality implies, language is the medium, emphasizing dialogue and reaching consensus is the goal, which provides a new theoretical perspective for the study of Cross-Strait communication. The Cross-Strait Olympic Committees negotiations on the ‘Olympic Model’ several times reflected the ‘effectiveness’ and ‘reasonableness’ characteristics of Habermas's rational theory of exchanges and it became a typical case of international Olympic activities. After 1949, the Chinese mainland and Taiwan in the international sports arena on the ‘ Chinese representation ‘ issue struggled for many years; January 1, 1979, the People's Republic of China and the United States formally established diplomatic relations. The evolution of the Chinese and English names of ‘Chinese Taipei’ is commonly known as the ‘Olympic model’ in the sports circle. Since then, the Taiwan region has also participated in several international organizations according to a model.
