ABSTRACT
This chapter supports the teaching of intervals, non-chord tones, closure and cadences, form, basic harmony (I, IV, V7, V65), and analysis by engaging deeply with Rhiannon Giddens’s (1977-) “Ten Thousand Voices,” from her 2019 album There Is No Other, and Francis “Frank” Johnson’s (1792-1844) “Victoria Galop,” published in 1839. These pieces could be used as touchstones throughout a semester, or just for a single assignment. The supplemental materials provide scores, transcriptions, and four worksheets that can be edited to suit an instructor’s needs.
