ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces a new approach for embodying heightened language, accounting for a diverse and inclusive training environment. Using the LASALLE College of the Arts’ BA (Hons) Acting Program as a case study, it deploys practice-based research to introduce a technique that combines existing praxis within a pedagogy that empowers actors to claim ownership of their speaking by accounting for who they are, how they sound, and where they are from. Called “sculpting/imaging the text,” the technique locates consonants and imagery in conjunction with specific parts of the actor’s body, allowing associative imagery to drop into their bodies, thereby activating the text and boosting actors’ confidence and skill in handling heightened language.
