ABSTRACT

Mindfulness, its derivatives of mindful awareness, and similar practices continue to flourish within the fields of academia and clinical work. Despite historical foundations in spiritual customs and growing popularity as an efficacious interventional tool, universal definitions of the terms continue to be elusive. The intrinsic link between mindfulness and compassion, though acknowledged as a progression in literature and practice, is also now being empirically founded. The current chapter consolidates the research on mindful awareness and compassion while alchemizing the findings to cater to how directed practice can aid the various pains and issues end-of-life healthcare providers face. As a journey of many paths, mindful awareness is discussed as a means for attentional and emotional co-regulation to achieve compassionate goals. The chapter concludes with how these paths may be navigated by care professionals, with instructions and scripts for simple, easy-to-follow practice curated by the authors.
