ABSTRACT

In the past decade, driven by emerging evidence in reducing burnout symptoms, improving practitioners’ well-being, and enhancing the quality of medical care, mindfulness-based programs (MBP) have been gaining popularity among healthcare professionals. Apart from these pragmatic goals, various modifications have been adapted to meet the needs of different specialties and medical organizations. These MBPs differ in format and focus, and many incorporate compassion and empathy components in their curricula, as well as themes of interconnectedness. A more compassionate healthcare system may be possible if values such as compassion, empathy, and interconnectedness are more fully embraced by individuals and different specialties in the interdisciplinary practice environment. Hence, education and training in mindfulness-based approaches to cultivate these values may help to ensure their expression in medical care.
