ABSTRACT

Compassion for others begins with compassion toward oneself. Palliative and end-of-life clinical care expose the clinician to suffering and loss which, if unaddressed, can lead to fatigue and burnout. Self-care can be difficult to address, but it is essential for survival and sustenance. Growing evidence supports high-quality educational programs to offer skills in self-care. However, organizations also have a role to ensure care for their staff is valued and respected in the same way that care is given to patients and families.
