ABSTRACT

Grief can be a very painful, disorienting, and threatening experiential process. The felt responses to grief are experienced in the body. Generally speaking, especially in our environment of constant hurry and distraction, we tend to be disconnected from the body, even when we are not in the midst of grief. Reconnecting to our most intimate somatic experience in safe, compassionate, and measured ways can ground us in a place of confidence, allowing us to move into and out of our felt emotions of bereavement, without being overwhelmed. With growing practice and self-awareness, this can allow for the safe and contained exploration of grief’s rough and raw terrain, and ultimately facilitate the release and relief from the most acute, and sometimes chronic, pains of loss.
