ABSTRACT

Chair work represents a collection of experiential methods that bring about change through here-and-now interactions with parts of the self and internalized individuals. Chair work has long been used to work through grief and associated forms of “unfinished business.” This chapter describes a variety of compassion-focused chair work procedures for addressing grief, including empty-chair, two-chair, multi-chair, and interview-focused procedures. Ways in which chair work can help overcome fears, blocks, and resistances to compassion in the context of bereavement are also discussed.
