ABSTRACT

For clarity of argument, the author begins by defining critical terms (“to care,” “fishes,” “anymal,” and “choice”). The idea of “caring” is then applied to the specifics of fishes (who they are biologically and mentally). Next, the chapter explores environmental damage caused by fishing, focusing on species depletions, indiscriminate methods, and bycatch. The author then debunks common “solutions” to these problems, as posed by fish-eaters, including aquaculture and “sustainable” labels. Finally, the author points out that, despite problems inherent in factory farming and fishing, hunting is no solution: those who care about animals (including human beings), or the planet, must go vegan.
