ABSTRACT

New omnivorism is the position that defenders of animals – those who love, care about, and respect them – should consume some animal products. More specifically, its proponents argue for the adoption of animal products that are procured outside the cruel systems of industrialized animal agriculture and whose consumption promises to lower overall animal suffering and death in the world. There is, from this author’s perspective, significant overlap and slight difference between veganism and new omnivorism. To date, however, there has been little work comparing and contrasting vegan and new omnivore policy. The aim of this chapter is to address this lacuna, with particular focus on what a new omnivore policy agenda may look like. Along the way, the author argues that vegans and new omnivores are close allies, not enemies.
