ABSTRACT

All knowledge is produced in the cultural context of human values, which affect what gets researched, but also to some degree it affects the results of the scientific research. The value systems which evert these pressures and influences on the world of knowledge and the action resulting is contained within the minds of the members of the culture, and so are subject to the various psychodynamic and group dynamic influences studied in psychoanalysis. The anxiety-defence structure of unconscious determinants at the individual and group-societal level is thus important factors in the origins and sustaining of the value system and of the influences on the serviceable knowledge of culture. This chapter considers the impact of the unconscious factors on, especially, the nature of exchange, of commodities and of money.
