ABSTRACT

This chapter mainly consists of an analysis of the statistical information obtained from the census reports of 1801 to 1901. For both the non-occupational and the occupational characteristics of the population, it is possible to obtain the data for the parliamentary burgh and for the municipal burgh. However, the rate of growth of the female population was generally less than that for the males, when examining the combined totals. However, this statement must be modified slightly if the totals are broken up. The importance of the statistics can be seen in a clearer light, when it is pointed out that approximately 44 per cent of the total male population was between the ages of 15 and 40; the corresponding figure for females was approximately 43 per cent. The statistics indicate a number of interesting structural changes within the Glasgow’s economy.
