ABSTRACT

To investigate the contested relationship between curating and care, the chapter first outlines the contradictions between capitalism and reproductive labour. By referring to curating´s etymological root, the chapter surveys how the politics of care are (re)negotiated within curatorial practices. The chapter specifically explores how care is made visible through artistic and curatorial practices and how care can serve as a curatorial method of engagement rather than as a mere representational theme. Drawing from her own participatory curatorial initiative on care at M.1 Arthur Boskamp-Stiftung in rural Northern Germany, the author and curator focuses on the artist-led workshop series Care for Caregivers. As the everyday acts as the terrain for social transformations, the locally situated, relational curatorial formats support the building of caring infrastructures to counter the ongoing care crisis.
