ABSTRACT
Collaborative uses of 3D virtual models and building information modelling (BIM) technology have transformed construction design. Their uses challenge existing conceptualisations of collaborative design which have been based on the uses of plans and drawings on paper. We argue that this long-term transformation has required and will require interactive, developmental learning at different networks of activities. In this chapter, we present the challenges of investigating transformations learning around BIM from three perspectives: 1) zooming out to the development of BIM in networks of activities where BIM-related stakeholders collaborate, 2) ways of organising collaboration with BIM in a construction project, and 3) zooming in to usages of BIM in specific face-to-face meetings during which it provided novel tangible means (“virtual materiality”) for collaboration. Interactive developmental learning takes place in all these networks of BIM-related activities.
