ABSTRACT

It is said that everyone has 20–20 vision with hindsight. Certainly, there is much I can ‘see’ now, that I could not ‘see’ or know in 2002 when I wrote this piece. In part, that reflects the much greater information accessible now, than was available around the turn of this century, the mushrooming of available internet sources having been a boon for historians. In other cases, however, my imagination was greater than my evidence. For example, Polakov did not arrive in the USA in 1906 with his daughter as I stated (Kelly, 2003, p. 64). Rather, Polakov adopted Catherine several years later in 1910, around the same time his wife Antoinette left him. A minor detail which does not interfere with the objectives of the story but good history should be as accurate as possible.
