ABSTRACT

Cremation in Poland is not a prevalent form of disposing of remains. It is a largely commercial enterprise. Altogether there are 74 crematoria, of which 11 are municipal. Approximate data regarding the proportion of cremation in relation to all funerals in 2021 amounted to 40%. In this chapter, factors affecting the increase in cremations and factors contributing to the steadily low numbers of cremations will be noted. The chapter describes a typical cremation ceremony, with its variants and options for the destination of cremated remains. The subsection “Crematoria Design” shows how legal regulations determine the design of crematoria. It also presents three dominant spatial forms of crematoria and the characteristic features of Polish design.
