ABSTRACT

The last two decades of socialism in Poland were a period of health crisis and a lack of any considerable progress in fighting the mortality rate. After the socialist system collapsed, the situation started to shift under the influence of numerous factors – economic and political changes that had an effect on lifestyle, diet, ways of spending free time, and access to healthcare. The aim of this chapter is to present the most important changes in the mortality rate observed after 1990 by answering some basic questions about how often, at what age, and at which stage of their family life or career Polish citizens die.
