ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the non-health effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. It adopts a conceptual approach to explore the key non-health effects and the broad socioeconomic challenges related to the spread of COVID-19 pandemic. Also, it identifies a gap in the policy approach adopted in addressing the non-health effects of COVID-19 pandemic, including the government order for total lockdown and restriction of movement of goods and persons. The research explores the complex realities of the non-health effects of COVID-19 pandemic, based on the current context and from the perspectives of the affected stakeholders. These tend to be expert-driven and widely narrow, focusing mainly on the health risks of COVID-19 pandemic on people. The study puts a premium on the identification and engagement of relevant stakeholders in the intervention process to enhance commitment, prioritisation of issues through boundary critique, and joint development of a practical approach to address the non-health effects of COVID-19 pandemic at various stages of the research. The study concludes that effective implementation of systemic intervention can ultimately emancipate the affected stakeholders from the non-health effects of COVID-19 pandemic, which can, in turn, support broad economic growth and development.
