ABSTRACT

World Economic Outlook in 2020 shows that the COVID-19 pandemic is inflicting high and increasing devastation of lives worldwide. Protecting lives and allowing health care systems to cope have required isolation, lockdowns, and widespread closures to slow the spread of the virus. The health crisis is therefore having a severe impact on socioeconomic activities. This chapter interrogates how income inequalities, social safety nets and economic recovery initiatives have contributed to positive peace across Nairobi informal settlements (IS). The work is based on a review that consulted reputable sources of information including recent surveys and reports on socioeconomic impact of COVID-19. The in-depth review situated within qualitative paradigm is expected to be a guide to policies and legislation development aimed to consolidate positive peace and development among people living in IS in Kenya. The results revealed that increasing unemployment and loss of income have aggravated the wellbeing of people in slums.
