ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces to the research the somewhat overlooked emotion of self-blame. In the chapter, we will explore the emotion of self-blame by focusing on some of its main characteristics, forms, processes and consequences. First, the chapter will deal with the nature of blame and blaming in general. This leads into a more detailed exploration and elaboration of self-blame as an emotion important to studies of individual life experiences, everyday settings and more macro-oriented social and cultural aspects of contemporary society. Here we will look at studies of different triggers of self-blame, the emotional processes involved in self-blaming, different forms and types of self-blame and some of the individual and social consequences of self-blame.
