ABSTRACT
The global media research community and the institution of mass communication are facing serious scrutiny and challenges due to the ongoing revolution in communications technology. Looking at the African context and Nigeria to be precise, due to the availability of technology, individuals are no longer restricted by their immediate social group and environment and by the physical availability of a few media channels, controlled by authorities and other agencies to get mediated content. There is a paradigm shift in the criteria required to join and get media content in 21st-century Nigeria; all these dynamisms are brought about by the coming of information and communication technologies (ICTs). Although it has been recognised that the continuity of mass communication as a society-wide process in its original sense is still with global society and Africans, when one looks at it in terms of single and central sources being received by large audiences and dedicated to maximum amplification and diffusion then one can see the impact of technology and the added twist of how Africans especially Nigerians react to this mediated content. As pointed out by Castells (2007), the growing interest of corporate media in Internet-based forms of communication which Nigerians and African societies also consume is in fact the reflection of the rise of a new form of socialised communication which in itself is a great threat to the notion and institution of mass communication and the media. This chapter will therefore assess the impact of technology on the future of mass communication, media research and theories from the Nigerian context in the 21st century.
