ABSTRACT

Communication and media studies in Nigeria have evolved progressively since the early days of the country’s independence in 1960 up to the present times. The origin of communication study in Nigeria has been a subject of interesting conversation; its contemporaneous development and dynamism remain quite engaging while the future of communication study presents a mixed bag of trepidation and heightened expectations. The overarching objectives of this effort are to present communication study in broad canvass to the reader by rummaging through secondary data for reliable historical artefacts of the subject; to examine the present configuration and trends of the study of communication and media; and to hazard an educated guess of the shape of the subject in the near future. Based on this, the chapter presents an overview of communication study in Nigeria, establishes different epochs from inception to now, as well as highlights the challenges that have attended the study. It also considers how the challenges have been handled and thereafter presents a crystal ball for the future of this dynamic profession bearing in mind the ever-changing influence of information and communication technology as well as the innovations in the sector.
