ABSTRACT

This chapter is aimed at tracing the history and evolution of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) right from the colonial era up to this present year. Specifically, this chapter traces the historical and ideological contexts that led to the establishment of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) in Nigeria. The antecedents that occurred during the colonial rule which led to the amendment of several decrees are fully outlined. More importantly, the chapter outlines how the establishment of various newspapers signalled the change of broadcasting in Nigeria from a colonial initiative to a wholly public (government) enterprise while narrating the admixture of public and private operations that followed deregulation of the broadcast industry in the country. The historical research method, qualitative and analytical, was adopted for this study. Secondary sources – materials from scholarly books, scholarly articles and newspaper articles – were also used for data gathering.
