ABSTRACT

This chapter assess the literature on sustainable development as a tool for, or an input in, climate change mitigation studies. A number of case studies have made an initial attempt to assess quantitative and qualitative SD impacts of climate change mitigation policies, and a number of results from these studies will be reviewed in this chapter. It reviews specific applications of the practical frameworks for sustainable development in the context of climate change mitigation studies that have been presented in the literature and to provide an overview of the main methodological similarities and differences. The chapter includes an overview of conceptual framework for climate change mitigation analysis within the paradigm of SD. The focus of the ancillary benefit literature has been on the short-term impacts of climate change mitigation, giving main attention to the inclusion of health impact estimates that are considered to be a dominant side-impact related to local air pollution.
