ABSTRACT

The manual also offers tips for advocating in the work place and evaluating job performance. Although the appendices provide specific task lists and scripts, most of these materials relate to a limited range of service industry jobs. The Utah State group underscores that the manual and accompanying tapes are meant to be used as supplementary materials to a formal co-worker training program and should not stand alone as an avenue to co-worker training. Management must also accept that co-workers will have training responsibilities and have the appropriate work schedule to train the employee with a disability. Co-worker recording of trainee performance data and periodic visits from rehabilitation agency personnel need to be accepted and supported. There are a number of continuing concerns related to the establishment of a co-worker training program. Recent research and demonstration projects have drawn attention to alternative community-based models and the use of natural supports within the work place.
