ABSTRACT

Advances in emergency medical care and evacuation procedures have greatly increased the number of people surviving severe brain injury. A number of recommendations covering conceptual approaches to service delivery and practical suggestions to support the individual’s transition to home are offered. Many staff hired to provide rehabilitation services have not had any formal training in treating the many complex and often subtle aspects of brain injury. Generalization can imply both the full-strength maintenance of skills, as well as the broadening or expansion of skills learned in treatment. Problems in addressing this topic often occurs due to confusion associated with the terminology used. The rehabilitation plan should be designed to achieve an outcome that will provide the greatest improvement in the individual’s ability to function in the discharge environment.
