ABSTRACT

The chapter outlines the research area of the psychology of sustainability and sustainable development, thereby continuing to open the black box of psychological processes involved. The chapter presents empirical evidence from studies related to various kinds of environments: natural, personal, social, and organizational. The Sustainable Development Goals Psychological Inventory (SDGPI) is presented. This inventory allows consideration of critical psychological components that promote and support the realization of the UN’s 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) through tailored interventions. Additionally, the chapter examines analogies and parallels between the psychology of sustainability and sustainable development and the psychology of safety and the psychology of innovation, which can help in understanding the psychology of sustainability and sustainable development. Future opportunities for research and interventions are introduced, with a particular focus on resources that can be enhanced through specific training in strengths-based prevention perspectives. The psychology of sustainability and sustainable development framework opens new trajectories for achieving development that is sustainable and innovative to foster healthy organizations.
