ABSTRACT

A successful bilingual journalist, Latinx or not, should understand how the racial structures of the United States and the hierarchical frameworks from Latin America play out in present-day Latinx communities in incidents of police brutality and racism. In Latin America and the United States, the constructs of race and colorism were brought to the region by European colonizers. This chapter presents a case study which explores historical and current news coverage of police brutality in different Latino communities. It will also investigate the current-day conversation about race and colorism prompted by the Black Live Matter protests of Summer 2020.
